Course Description: The Neurology Neuromodulation Workshop offers PGY-3 neurology residents didactic learning and a cadaver lab to study neuromodulation therapies, highlighting the role of the neurologist in a multidisciplinary setting. Attendees train in the use of deep brain stimulation, intrathecal medication management for pain and spasticity, and neuromodulation for chronic pain. Workshop participants must be members of NANS in good standing and are selected by an application process. Shared didactic content and cadaver learning among the other specialties workshops, including pain, neurosurgery, and engineering, foster a multidisciplinary network.

Target Audience:
This course is designed for PGY3 Neurology Residents.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this this educational activity, participants should be able to:
Describe the mechanisms of implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Identify appropriate patient indications and selection criteria for use of spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, deep brain stimulation, and intrathecal drug delivery.
Recognize psychological considerations involved in patient selection for implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Define contraindications to implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Discuss the preoperative evaluation of patients being considered for implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Characterize biologic, technical, and hardware-related complications of implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Describe measures and methods to identify, limit, and manage biologic, technical, and hardware-related complications of implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Discuss spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, and deep brain stimulation programming troubleshooting.
Discuss management and dosing of intrathecal drugs and delivery methods. 
List appropriate steps for intrathecal pump refills.
Analyze methods to encourage patient compliance with implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Appraise the current literature on the efficacy and safety of implantable neuromodulation therapies.
Summarize the importance of incorporating implantable pain therapies into a neurology practice.

Registration Information:

Workshop participants are selected by an application process. PGY-3 residents must submit their name and complete the required application. All applications must be received by 8:00 am (EST) on September 1, 2017.

Registration for the NANS Annual Meeting is mandatory in order to participate in the workshop. 

Preferential entry into the course is given to NANS members, and as this is a highly competitive training opportunity, NANS membership is required in order to participate.

Attendees of the Workshop Will Be Provided:
Two night's stay (room & tax) on Wednesday, January 10 and Thursday January 11 at the LINQ Resort and Casino.
Additional nights at the hotel for the NANS Annual Meeting should be arranged by the resident, and will be at their own expense (at a discounted hotel rate).
Round trip airfare (non-refundable coach).  
Transportation between the Oquendo Center and the LINQ Resort and Casino.
