Nicole A. Busch, MSN, APRN, AGNCS-BC is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and Clinical Nurse Specialist at Direct Orthopedic Care, Pain Management Division in Austin, TX. Specializing in interventional pain management, she focuses on treating both acute and chronic pain using a multimodal approach, including medication management, injections, physical therapy, and neuromodulation therapy. As Co-Chair of the NANS APP Committee, Nicole is passionate about educating fellow APPs and helping them advance their practices. She finds fulfillment in empowering her patients with treatment options, many of which they didn’t know were available, and improving their quality of life.

Areas of Expertise:
I am an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) specializing in Interventional Pain Management. My area of expertise includes treatment of both acute and chronic pain with a multimodality plan of care, including medication management, injections, physical therapy, and neuromodulation therapy. I am a champion of education for other APPs in the specialty, and I have worked hard to partner with organizations, such as NANS, to help other APPs grow in their practices. I am currently the Co-Chair for the NANS APP Committee.

Why I enjoy what I do:
I have the privilege as an APP in Interventional Pain Management to directly improve the lives of my patients. I enjoy being able to educate and empower my patients with their options for treatment, many of which they didn’t know were even available! It is incredibly rewarding to be able to build a relationship of trust with my patients, so together we can improve their health and quality of life.

How I became interested in neuromodulation:
In truth, neuromodulation found me! As an APP, there was not an opportunity to have a fellowship in pain management while in graduate school. Before I started working in pain management, I was a hospitalist. When I decided I needed a change from the hospital life, I found a position as an APP in pain management, and I quickly fell in love. It has been an incredible experience watching the science in neuromodulation blossom since I began my career in the specialty 2017.

The best thing about NANS:
The best thing about NANS is being able to foster community with other colleagues within the specialty of neuromodulation.  Through this organization, not only do I get to remain up to date with emerging science in neuromodulation, but I also have had the honor to meet and come together with others in varying specialties who utilize neuromodulation in their practices. Most dear to my heart is that NANS offers a space for APPs through the APP Committee to come together to share ideas and educate each other in a fun, inclusive environment. Through NANS, I have been able to build relationships with other APPs from all over the world, many of whom I am now fortunate enough to call my friends.

My favorite movie & Book:
Unwaveringly, it has always been Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen (both the book and the A&E movie version).
