NANS joined 10 other societies to press Congress to amend the SUPPORT Act to protect access to intrathecal pain pumps. Specifically, the letter requests changes to the code by allowing direct dispensing of medication syringes to the prescribing physician or their designate (such as the refilling agency) and adding Schedule II medications to the list of approved schedules for these deliveries. As it stands, the SUPPORT Act includes an exception to the federal law that restricts pharmacies from dispensing controlled medications to anyone except the end user. However, that exception only allows direct dispensing to the practitioner when treating opioid use disorder.
This restriction has created significant logistical barriers and burdensome workarounds, along with sowing confusion for practitioners and their patients. Read the letter submitted to Congress here.
