The North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS), alongside several leading medical societies, recently submitted a joint letter to Elevance Health expressing concern over its policy classifying peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) as investigational for the treatment of chronic pain. The letter underscores a growing body of clinical evidence supporting PNS as a safe and effective therapy for conditions such as chronic migraine, neuropathic pain, and complex regional pain syndrome—demonstrating meaningful improvements in both pain and function.
While PNS devices are FDA-cleared and supported by established Medicare coverage policies, the societies note that some private payer policies continue to limit access despite this strong evidence base. NANS and its partners are encouraging Elevance Health to review the latest data and align its policy with current clinical evidence, helping ensure patients have access to this minimally invasive, evidence-based treatment option for chronic pain.
