Scam Alert: DEA Impersonation Targeting Medical Practitioners

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is warning medical professionals about a rise in scams involving fake letters and phone calls. Scammers are impersonating DEA agents and falsely claiming that practitioners are under investigation—often in an attempt to steal personal or sensitive information.

What to Know:

• DEA will never call about an investigation or demand payment.
• Scammers may request your DEA registration number, Social Security number, or even payment via gift cards or wire transfers.
• These communications are fraudulent and illegal.

What to Do:

• Do not respond or provide any information.
• Report scams to the FBI at www.ic3.gov.
• Report fraud to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
• If personal information was shared, visit identitytheft.gov for next steps.
