Dr. Lawrence Poree is a distinguished figure in the field of neuromodulation, serving as the Professor and Director of the Neuromodulation Program at the University of California, San Francisco. With expertise in spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal therapy, he is dedicated to life-changing therapy, education, and innovation. Lawrence finds immense reward in providing relief to patients who have suffered from chronic pain, witnessing their reconnection with life's joys, and passing on this knowledge to trainees. His passion lies in pushing the boundaries of neuromodulation therapies, driving innovation, and shaping the future of patient care in this evolving medical field.

Why l love what I do
Life changing therapy, education, and innovation are the three pillars of why I enjoy what I do.  When working with patients who have experienced pain for years to decades it is rewarding to be able to provide some level of relief and watch as they reengage with their family, friends and other life fulfilling activities.  The only thing more rewarding than treating patients is to share this experience with trainees as they witness the impact of our therapies on the lives of patients they encounter.  As a relatively new area of medicine, there seems to be an endless frontier of opportunities to improve our neuromodulation therapies, and I find engaging in the innovation and development of these new therapies both fascinating and rewarding knowing they will have an impact on future patients and neuromodulators.

How I became interested in neuromodulation
As a graduate student I studied the analgesic properties of endogenous compounds and became interested in methods for tapping into the body’s analgesic processes to reset normal homeostasis.  In medical school I found neuromodulation to be a fascinating avenue to pursue this interest and have a profound impact on the live of patients.

I’m a NANS member because
I am a member of NANS because of the organization’s commitment to advance access, education, and development of all aspects of neuromodulation therapies throughout the spectrum of medical specialties.  I am especially pleased with NANS’ commitment to increase the diversity of the organization as well as to actively pursue strategies to reach communities of patients that do not have equitable access to neuromodulation therapies.
