Vishad Sukul, MD, FAANS is the chief of functional & epilepsy neurosurgery at Westchester Medical Center and is an associate professor of neurosurgery and neurology at New York Medical College, located in Valhalla, NY. He specializes in functional neurosurgery and neuromodulation, with a particular focus on deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, and epilepsy neuromodulation. His expertise is sought by patients from the NYC metro area and Hudson Valley extending as far north as Albany. He has been a member of NANS for almost a decade. He appreciates the education, innovation, collaboration and many friendships the organization has afforded him over the years.

Areas of Expertise
Expert in deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, pain neuromodulation, and epilepsy surgery.

Why I enjoy what I do:
It is truly remarkable that neuromodulation can create such profound positive change in patients’ lives. I love that our specialty offers opportunities for patients with such disabling disease processes to see improvement in their quality of life. It is also exciting to see how advances in technology lead to improved patient outcomes.

How I became interested in neuromodulation:
I became interested in neuromodulation many years ago as a medical student. Deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s and tremor was one of the first neurosurgery cases I was exposed to and it drove my interest in the field, ultimately cementing my career choice in functional neurosurgery.

The best thing about NANS
The best thing about NANS is how the society fosters collaboration between so many different disciplines throughout scientific, clinical and advocacy work. It helps me to stay connected to the many advances in the science of neuromodulation and is a great place to develop new ideas. I also enjoy how focused NANS is on education and have appreciated the many opportunities to participate, teach, and learn! The friendships I have made as a result are an added bonus!

What did you enjoy about attending NANS 2024:
NANS 2024 was excellent. I enjoyed the breadth of education, scientific excellence & innovation, opportunities to teach young neuromodulators, and reconnecting with many friends and colleagues.

What are your dreams or wishes for the future of the field of neuromodulation?
I hope that neuromodulation continues to advance in a manner that provides considerable improvement in patients’ quality of life, improves technology, and expands the disease processes we can treat while maintaining strong ethical guidelines.

Hopes for NANS as it celebrates its 30th anniversary:
I hope that NANS continues to be at the forefront in the science, education and advocacy work surrounding neuromodulation, and continues to provide the many wonderful opportunities to members to collaborate in our field.
